Silane Fire & Explosion Safety |
|
AIGA Silane Safety Seminar, Taiwan, Sep 2006 Silane, SiH4, is a pyrophoric gas used extensively in the semiconductor, LCD and photovoltaic industries. In the recent years there have been fatal incidents involving silane releases in Taiwan and India. Across the industry there have been many more near misses and incidents involving small but damaging or disruptive fires and explosions.
Our consultants have advised on the prevention of silane fires and explosion for over 20 years, and RUSHBROOK have completed a wide range of risk assessment and risk mitigation projects for clients in the semiconductor and LCD industries ranging from standard gas cylinders in cabinets to bulk ISO module distribution systems feeding multiple production facilities.
RUSHBROOK can advise on all aspects of Silane fire and explosion safety and how to apply standards such as NFPA 318, FM7-7 and CGA G-13 using a cost effective and pragmatic approach that will meet with the acceptance of underwriters, risk managers and local code officials.

PPs Duct burning during test Plastic fume exhaust systems have been implicated in all major cleanroom fires over the last 30 years. Combustible plastic in polypropylene, PVC and glassfibre reinforced plastic ductwork allows fires to spread throughout the cleanroom and contributes to the spread of smoke and corrosive by-products of combustion which damage the highly sensitive and sophisticated equipment that is employed in a modern wafer fabrication cleanroom.
Fires in Scotland, Taiwan, France and England have all resulted in the loss of an entire cleanroom to fire and smoke, causing hundreds of millions of pounds of property damage and business interruption. Such incidents are preventable through the use of existing fire protection technology and modern firesafe duct construction.
For existing facilities, the use of a risk assessment approach to identify the best combination of risk mitigation solutions can significantly reduce the fire risk in a modern wafer fab, while ensuring that the protection is practical and cost-effective.

Often Insurance risk surveys can result in clients being presented with multiple recommendations and no clear direction for risk mitigation. At RUSHBROOK we developed a RISK PROFILING methodology and report format to assist our clients deal with this challenge.
Following a detailed survey, our consultants develop a risk profile to clearly demonstrate the range of hazards presenting significant exposures to property, operations and life safety. Our report quantifies the achievable risk reduction and using cost benefit analysis we demonstrate those risk mitigation measures which are appropriate and cost effective.
RUSHBROOK Risk Profiling can be carried out as part of, in place of or in addition to traditional property insurance surveys and can be instructed by the insured, brokers, insurers, re-insurers, or by the insured.
